Plastic-free clothing — stop wearing synthetic fibers
Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and fleece shed microscopic plastic fibers every wash and every wear. Microplastics are now measured in human blood, lung tissue, and placentas. The simplest mitigation is wearing fabric that doesn't shed plastic in the first place.
- ·A single 6 kg synthetic load releases ~700,000 fibers per wash; fleece is worst at ~1.7 million.
- ·Synthetic fibers also shed during wear — they're a measurable contributor to indoor air pollution.
- ·Recycled polyester sheds slightly less than virgin, but still sheds. Plastic is plastic.
- ·Cotton, linen, hemp, wool, and Tencel/lyocell don't shed microplastics.
