1969 · Rei Kawakubo
Rei Kawakubo founded Comme des Garçons in Tokyo in 1969 and showed in Paris from 1981 — her debut collection of distressed, asymmetric, monochrome garments was so confrontational the French press called it "Hiroshima chic." The label rewired what fashion could look like: holes treated as design, seams turned outward, silhouettes that refused the body. CdG runs a constellation of lines (Play, Homme Plus, BLACK, Junya Watanabe) and Dover Street Market, the multi-brand retail concept that reshaped luxury retail.
