Hardshell

B

Waterproof breathable membrane fabric (Gore-Tex, eVent, or similar technology) laminated to a face fabric. The gold standard for rain and storm protection in technical outerwear.

What this score doesn't measure

This is a material rating, not a verdict on any specific garment made from hardshell. The axes above are research-backed averages for the fiber itself.

  • ร—Construction. Yarn staple length, weave / knit structure, stitch count, finishing. Identical fiber, very different garments.
  • ร—Fabric weight (GSM). A 140 GSM tee and a 220 GSM tee made of the same hardshell feel and last very differently.
  • ร—Dye + finishing chemicals. Beyond the three we flag (PFAS, formaldehyde, antimony), dozens of textile finishes aren't modelled.

Detailed Use Case Scores

Pros

  • โœ“ Fully waterproof โ€” sealed seams block all rain penetration
  • โœ“ Windproof โ€” complete protection from wind chill
  • โœ“ Breathable membrane allows body vapor to escape
  • โœ“ Lightweight and packable for its level of protection

Cons

  • โœ— Expensive โ€” technical membranes add significant cost
  • โœ— Crinkly and noisy compared to softshell fabrics
  • โœ— Limited insulation โ€” primarily a weather barrier, not warmth layer
  • โœ— Membrane can delaminate with age or improper care

Special Notes

โ€ข Use tech wash only

โ€ข Tumble dry low to reactivate DWR coating

โ€ข Never use fabric softener or regular detergent

Additional Care Tips

  • โ€ข Machine wash warm (40ยฐC/105ยฐF) with technical fabric wash โ€” no regular detergent
  • โ€ข Do not use fabric softener โ€” permanently damages membrane pores
  • โ€ข Tumble dry on medium heat for 20 minutes โ€” reactivates DWR coating
  • โ€ข Do not iron or dry clean โ€” heat and solvents destroy membrane
  • โ€ข Reapply DWR treatment when water no longer beads on the surface
